Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

A passive audience is when the audience take in information without questioning it.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

An active audience is when the audience make their own choice in believing the media they consume.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

A hypodermic needle theory is when the audience is passive and the media is injected into their minds.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The news
 > Why: It introduces new information going around the world and informs you of anything interesting or tragic that might have happened.

PERSONAL IDENTITY: The dumping Ground
 > Why: Most teenagers would be able to relate to the drama or argument that happens of TV as if their seeing their own life.

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Star Wars
 > Why: It contains a lot of action that could pull the audience in and influence them to continue watching , this will have the viewer so focused on it that they'll forget about any problems they have.

RELATIONSHIPS: Love island
 > Why: Makes the audience get attached to the islanders or even a certain couple and after a long period of watching you'll start caring for them.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

The Blue planet video clip brings Visceral pleasure to some audience as viewers who've come back for a long day of work or school would be intrigued to the show as Sir David Attaboutough's voice gives off a carm and relaxing vibe. This can be backed up by the voice over in the trailer combined with the unique and never seen images of sea creatures. Another reason why some would feel visceral pleasure is shown at 0:55 were a grey wale is being shot, this would make the audience be shocked and in awe at how phenomenal the creature appears to be. Also, the moments captured under water could make the audience feel as if their in a whole new world which leads them to feel adventurous as well as frightened as they don't know what the future has in store for them.

Vicarious pleasure would be bought to others as the camera shots that were filmed under water could make the audience visualise themselves in the position among the sea animals which makes the audience feel as if their apart of such spectacular moments. At 2:02, we are being present with a "enchanted under sea forest", this could make the viewers fantasies such a magical place, reminding them of their childhood and how they didn't care about their surroundings and would only daydream about mythical creatures. Around 3:44, we are presented with a magnificent shot on top of a shark/whale, giving the audience the experience to investigate the hidden messages of the ocean.

Throughout, the trailer, voyeuristic pleasure would be shown just before 2:28, this is where a hidden camera is placed to show how the sea creature is seen in its natural habitat and what it tends to do in the sea. Voyeuristic pleasure is shown through out the clip of Blue planet as they use high quality equipment to get the best shots of theses spectacular creatures and to explore new and unfound sea animals. The close ups displayed at the end helps the audience recognise and learn the behaviour of the animals so they could get a better understanding about what they do and receive a bit of information to do with the ocean.
