Reception reading

 1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?

The preferred reading of a media text is the message wants you to believe when receiving the media.

2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?

The oppositional reading of media text is when the consumer believes a totally different idea from what the producer wanted you to believe.

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?

The trailer for Harry Brown positions the audience to see the teenagers as villains, this could be because of the violent actions shown throughout the trailer. As well as this, the teenagers were dressed in very dark, ripped clothes and were also made to carry weapons, this implies that their very dangerous and should be punished for their actions.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?

Young people may reject the reading of the trailer as they view it as a exaggerated way of how they try to survive in this cruel word. They believe that their weapons are self defence and have learnt these bad actions from the environment they were force to grow up in. as well as this, they fear people older than them which pushes them to look tough and powerful.

5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

Using Stuart Hall's Reception theory, a preferred reading of the McDonald's advert is that it looks appetising for the audience this can be backed up by the words in the anchorage text-"It's as good as it is big." The connotation of the word 'big' and the anchorage text  "A meal disguised as a sandwich," this implies how  huge and well constructed this burger is made for it to be able to contain such crisp ingredients. The reference of the lettuce sticking out of the bun could make the audience realise that this could be seen as a healthy option for any viewers who are worried about the amount of calories their receiving. This can be backed up by the anchorage text "fresh lettuce; and crunchy all pickled slices," this assures the consumer that its partly healthy. Overall the size of this Big mac brings the whole advert together telling the audience that it's a unique concept and is perfect proportions to fill you up.

Some people may challenge these reasons as an oppositional reading for the McDonald advert is that they may believe it as being represented fake. Previous McDonald customers would have witnessed the construction of most McDonald's burgers and would have compared them to see how sloppy they have been made. As well as this, another oppositional reading would be from the people who are on a diet as they would see this as a greasy and unhealthy burger which could lead them off track from what their goals may be. This could also be the same with vegetarians as in the advert and the anchorage it shows a "two lean patties of 100% beef", this means they would be taking a different response to what the producer had first intended. Therefore, this advert is not completely flawless for the audience to fully believe what the producer was trying to communicate.

However, others may acknowledge both the preferred and oppositional reading which would lead them to have a negotiated reading. The audience who may have been intruded and would have gone to purchasing a Big Mac only to result in the size being smaller to what they had originally thought. Furthermore, most people would have already visited McDonald and be aware of how careless they are making their burger nonetheless they would still be intrigued into buying The Big Mac and seeing for themselves if it as delicious as the anchorage text says. In conclusion, everyone has a different reading to the poster whether its from agreeing with what the producer intended to going against what the whole purpose of the message was.

6) Now find your own advertisement and write a 150+ word analysis using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

Including the Reception theory of Stuart Hall, a preferred reading of this Haikyuu advert is that it looks exhilarating to watch, which intrigues the audience this can be shown by the only image in the centre of the advert containing a group of anime boys in a range of positions. This makes the audience feel as if these characters are waiting for you , this may more than likely be to buy the tickers to premier the episodes live every week on MBS/TBC radio. The black feathers scattered at the top makes the audience refer to a crow which connotes fierce and something that's ready to attack. This can be backed up by the characters wearing a sports uniform which indicated that is quite a fast pace sport. Another preferred reading can be seen by the two sets of five stars placed at the bottom of the advert, this infers that is been reviewed and is the highest quality as well as this the explanation marks throughout the advert reflects that this anime is in great haste.

Other people may think differently, and oppositional reading to this Haikyuu advert as people from a foreign country wouldn't be able to understand or recognise that most of the words are written in Japanese. This would make these types of audience want to ignore this advert as they have no way of reading the text provided. As well as this, the colour of the advert is mostly white and can be described as plain this is because of how theres nothing eye-catching or interesting to draw the attention of the audience.

On the other hand, remainder of people would have agreed with both of them, a negotiated reading would be that the audiences would recognise these characters from around the media and would be intrigued to go check it out. This makes more and more viewers interested however, the only picture shown doesn't give out much information about what the anime is based on which could make the audience uninterested in the advert. In conclusion, the information that the producer first intended to communicate is shown even though some people might perceive it as a different thought.
