Representation and stereotypes: blog tasks
1) Write a definition of representation in media studies. Clue: The answer is in the notes above!
Representation is how diffrent types of people are portrayed in diffrent media.
2) Now look at the cover of Closer magazine above. List all different types of people and groups represented on the front cover. E.g. women, celebrities, race/ethnicity etc.
The diffrent types of people or groups that are on the cover of Closer magazine are celebrities, women or mothers and mostly light skin women.
3) What does the representation of women on this front cover suggest female audiences are mainly interested in?
This suggest that female audience are mainly interested in love scandals, any complicated romance, gossip and dont mind whether it true or fake.
4) Are there any stereotypes you can identify? E.g. women and motherhood; celebrities etc.
The stereotypes I can identify is that women associate with the colour pink. Another stereotype is that people often think that mothers are the ones who are the ones to cause mayhem and start scandals so their often on most romance related magazines.
5) Is there anything on the cover that subverts typical stereotypes in the media?
The subverts typical stereotypes on the cover would be the media at the top of the magazine where it shows a gay couple. Normally LGBTQ+ isnt seen on front covers.
6) What is the preferred reading of this magazine cover - what do the producers want audiences to think when they see it?
The producer want the audience to see a feminish side to it so they will instantly know that most girls would read this type of gossip as well as enjoy it. Also that most women are the type to get involved in complicated matters to do with love.
7) What is the oppositional reading of this magazine cover - how might someone criticise this magazine cover or be offended by it?
The oppositional reading is that it is seen as stereotypes and that the articles are seen as fake and can cause people to have a negative thought about the magazine company.
8) What are the social and cultural contexts to this magazine cover? What effect might this magazine have on readers or society?
The social contexts to this magazine cover is that it influences women or people to realise being a mother makes u happy and it affects people in society by making them want to look a certain way to fir in. The cultural context would be that the typical ideas or belief in society are that being in a relationship can help u change your life while in reality its diffresnt as people have diffrent ways to make themselves feel happy. The effect the magazine might have on the reader is that it'll influence to change or act diffrently so that they can be viewed as the medias perfect.
