Introduction to Science-fiction TV drama

 1) How does Class meet the conventions of a TV drama series?

Class is able to meet the conventions of a TV drama series as it contains a lot of dramatic scenes within the episodes giving the audience a lot of conflicts. This is shown by the cliffhangers at the end of every scene with the recap at the start using the words 'Previously on...' which can be seen in any TV drama series. As well as this, this series is placed in a school, presenting the audience with a recognisable setting. This gives the audience a realistic element as they are able to recognise the settings reminding them of their own memories.

2) What conventions of the science-fiction genre can you find in the Class trailer? List as many as you can and use NCIS to help you.

The different conventions of science-fiction that can be found in the Class trailer is narrative this is implied by the portals that could possibly be to another dimension showing the danger and threat towards the universe that the characters are in giving off elements of war. Another science-fiction convention is characters as we are shown the heroes who are seen as the teenagers theses are the character who drive the story and keep it going attracting the 'aliens'. As well as this, iconography is also seen as a convention due to lasers and different weapons appear communicating a futuristic look towards the audience. Including this, the orange glow and blue lights also gives a dark scifi look. 

3) What other genres are suggested by the trailer (e.g. horror)? Is Class an example of a modern hybrid-genre show?

In the Class trailer it shows other genres which suggests its an example of a modern hybrid-genre show as it presents horror-scifi which can be seen by the darkness and shadows who are implied to be the villain as well as this the audience can see lava communicating a hellish look. Another genre is teen drama this is shown in the setting as it introduces the viewers to a school and the characters homes this is immediately recognised by the audience as they would make references to the genre teen drama.

4) Class is a spin-off from Doctor Who. At what point does the character of the Doctor appear in the trailer?

The character Doctor appears near the middle of the Class trailer protecting the teenagers from something showing that they were in danger. The doctor is seen to be holding a object called the 'sonic screwdriver' which is recognisable by the audience due to it being an object associated with the doctor in Doctor Who. Aside from this, the doctor is saying the line 'You're heard of me haven't you' which is more towards the audience who've come from the series Doctor who than to the creature who is trying to harm them.

5) Who do you think the target audience for Class is? Is this a typical target audience for the science-fiction genre? Give reasons for your answer.


The target audience for Class is shown as teens as this is a typical target audience for the science-fiction genre as most teens would be more interest in this giving them a reason to escape reality and focus more on the interesting story line. Class could also attract teens due to their recognisable cast as the permanence of the doctor from Doctor Who could shock the audience as its seen as a plot twist. However, more older people could watch Class as Doctor Who was a childhood show that they ended up watching and now in the future want to go and check out the spin off to give them memories of their younger self.
