1) Who is the target audience for Doctor Who? Has it changed since 1963?

The target audience for Doctor who in 1963 were more male than female because of how people beloved that men were more educated and would therefore enjoy the genre of science fiction. It was also proven that Doctor who was watched as a family as well as this, race and ethnicity is shown as it was a British show that had all white casts. working and middle class tend to watch Doctor who as they were educated on different matters. It is believed Doctor who has changed since 1963 as now days it is believed that more women are fans than men and that a wide range of people watch the new re made version as they have interest in science and solace.

2) What audience psychographic groups might particularly enjoy Doctor Who?

The audience psychographic groups that might particular enjoy Doctor Who are mainstreams every Saturday evening Doctor Who was presented on BBC1 for people watching. Explorers on the other hand, enjoy Doctor who due to their interest in the topics of science-fiction or new technology.

Personal Identity: High school setting, pop music, rebellion in TARDIS.

Personal Relationships: Character-cliffhanger at the end of episode, worried for ian and Barbra. Doctor seems like a villain.

Diversion (Escapism):Science-fiction, new, futuristic, mysterious/crime drama

Surveillance (Information / Facts): Science/ history/space/technology.

4) What additional Uses and Gratifications would this episode provide to a modern 2020 audience?

Additional uses and gratification that could provide to a modern day audience would be Surveillance this is because 2020 audience can learn about history in 1963 and be able to see how they viewed technology and being introduced to new genres.

5) Thinking of the 3 Vs audience pleasures (Visceral, Vicarious and Voyeuristic pleasures), which of these can be applied to An Unearthly Child?


We can use voyeuristic pleasure to apply to An Unearthly Child as this episode shows the audience what you wont normally see this is presented when the main characters entered the TARDIS giving the audience a brand new setting to take in and start to recognise.

1) What was the television industry like in 1963? How many channels were there?

Back in 1963 the television industry was a public service broadcaster the funding was earned by the public. there were only two channels that were BBC and ITV.

2) Why is Doctor Who such an important franchise for the BBC? 

Doctor Who is such a important franchiser for the BBC because it follows the BBC mission statement that is inform,educate and entertain for all children that watch its shows.

3) How does Doctor Who meet the BBC's mission statement to 'inform, educate and entertain'?

Doctor Who meets the BBC's mission statement as this series teaches children about History throughout the years by time travelling to different dimensions in the TRADES. This gains the attention of the children while also teaching and educating them in different topics. 

4) How is the BBC funded?

The BBC is funded by audience or fans that buy their merchandise as well as the TV license.

5) Who regulates the BBC and what is the watershed?

The BBC regulators are Ofcom and a watershed is the period of time that children friendly shows come off and more mature themed content comes on for the adults which here is 9pm.
