Preliminary exercise learner response
WWW: This is a good preliminary exercise that largely meets the brief and also provides some great lessons in filmmaking for the real coursework. The music is effective and communicates the genre appropriately but then is too loud to make out the conversation. Despite this, there are some excellent touches – the framing of the shots is strong and I like that there’s a some humour in the dialogue. This works for the teenage/young adult target audience who would expect some humour alongside the drama.
EBI: The major aspect that holds this back is Watanpreet’s
side of the conversation as it is difficult to make out the words –
particularly towards the end of the clip. You needed to bring the music level
down as the clip continues so the tension is created through the
dialogue/narrative resolution. It’s a great lesson in the importance of getting
the sound right and also filming outside school if at all possible.
LR: What have you learned about filming and editing from
this preliminary exercise? What will you change or do differently for your real
coursework production over the next three weeks?
From this preliminary exercise I was able to understand that when filming clips I have to make sure to film extra seconds before and after the clip. This ensures that the clips line up smoothly for the audience to watch without awkward moments in between. In my real coursework when editing I need to focus on making sure the non-diegetic sound lowers for the audience to be able to hear the characters.
